Shelby Thren: Northern Michigan Outreach Team Member

Tell us a little about yourself:
Hi! My name is Shelby Thren, I am a 25 year old female from Central Michigan. I am a Health Educator with District Health Department #10 and am currently working on a campaign. My passions outside of work include running, hiking, and playing with my 3 year old Weimaraner named Brady!

What does mean to you? is a great resource for you to gain knowledge about important sexual topics such as birth control methods, STI prevention, sex, unintended pregnancy, and sexuality. It gives you the tools to simply “start the conversation”. These topics are important and affect our lives as an individual and as a partner. Although they are important conversations to have they can be a touchy subject because there are a lot of emotions behind all of them. puts it out there and gives you the option to choose how you want to “start the conversation”; it’s time to start talking!

How did you get involved in
All channels of health are important to me as an advocate and educator. Sexual health became an avenue that I enjoyed learning more about and sharing my knowledge with others during my senior year of college at Central Michigan University (Fire up chips!). At CMU, health education students have the opportunity to be a part of the “safer sex patrol” where we go to local bars at night and hand out condoms and resources to students who voluntarily take them. The message goes farther than just free condoms; we would have serious talks with students on campus by providing an open-door atmosphere where they can ask the tough questions. Now as a health educator I am fortunate to have to continue this education in my community.

What is your favorite outreach item and why?
I like the stickers, I have one on my water bottle and it is a great conversation starter!

Has impacted you in anyway and how?
Yes! It is a fabulous resource and is laid out in a way that is easy to navigate and understand. It has helped me to educate and talk about sexual health.

What have you learned since being involved with has taught me how to ask the tough questions about topics such as having a baby and my partner isn’t ready, in a well manured way. I am not an expert in sexual health education and has helped me to learn more about these topics so that I can help others.
